WORLDBEAT

1982

Worldbeat blends elements of New Age music with global influences, incorporating traditional instruments, rhythms, and melodies from various cultures. As the world became more interconnected, musicians began experimenting with sounds from different regions, merging Asian Folk, tribal beats, and Western Pop, to name a few. The genre emerged through the use of studio technology, which allowed artists to sample and combine diverse musical traditions, creating a fusion that aimed to celebrate global unity. However, Worldbeat has sparked debate. Some view it as a positive celebration of cultural diversity, while others criticise it as cultural appropriation. Despite this, native musicians have also adoped electronic elements to enhance their own music. The genre saw commercial success in the 90s, with artists like Enigma blending club beats and ethnic sounds, but it eventually lost mainstream appeal. Nonetheless, Worldbeat continues to thrive in underground scenes. Today, Worldbeat persists in various forms, reflecting ongoing cross-cultural exchanges in music.
